Announcement from the Office of the Superintendent

Deming Public Schools is committed to the safety and well-being of our students and staff. We take all allegations seriously and believe one of our many duties is to teach appropriate behavior and personal responsibility. We hold ourselves and our students to a high standard and will continue to directly address incidents that disrupt a safe and caring environment through classes and instruction, parent partnerships, and appropriate consequences.

On March 9, 2023, Deming High School administration received information late in the day of a possible hazing incident. The District is thoroughly investigating the incident and has notified local law enforcement so they can complete their own investigation.

To date, the District has concluded that hazing did not occur, however, proper disciplinary measures were enforced for violations of the District’s Student Code of Conduct, Board Policy, and Employee Handbook. In accordance with applicable state and federal privacy laws, specific details related to discipline will not be disclosed. The law enforcement side of this incident resides with local authorities.

We ask for the public’s support in not spreading inaccurate information. While we understand and appreciate everyone’s concern, the spreading of false or slightly inaccurate information is unfair and damaging to our students, our school, and our community. Together we can lift our children up to be kind to all and take responsibility for their actions. We ask you to help us.

DHSEM responds to school safety threat

 SANTA FE –

On Wednesday, a student in Roswell, NM received a social media message stating that an attack on the school was imminent. The same messaging has been received by students at school districts across the state. Local law enforcement has increased their presence at schools in response to the threat. The New Mexico Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM) is coordinating information from local law enforcement and the FBI who are investigating the cause of the threats but currently, they are not considered credible. DHSEM is coordinating with law enforcement partners and the New Mexico Public Education Department to ensure student safety.

PSA: Safety Construction at Schools

In our ongoing commitment to safety, Deming Public Schools (DPS) has begun construction on secure vestibules at several school sites. The secured vestibule is an enclosed area between the outside door of a building and the inside door. This area is where a visitor completes their business with the school without being given access to the interior of the school. DPS continues to prioritize the safety of our schools and secure vestibules are another layer of security measures being taken in alignment with best safety practices.

The following schools will be affected by this construction:

·Bataan Elementary, (575) 544-0900

·Bell Elementary, (575) 546-9712

·Chaparral Elementary, (575) 546-0247

·Columbus Elementary, (575) 531-2710

·Memorial Elementary, (575) 546-2502

·Ruben S. Torres Elementary, (575) 544-2723

·Red Mountain Middle School, (575) 546-0668

Entry to the schools will be modified by each site to accommodate the construction and ensure student safety. Construction is expected to continue through June 30, 2023. For more information, please contact your school or the district at (575) 546-8841.

PSA: Transportation Announcement

Deming Public Schools wants to inform the public that today, April 26, 2023, Bus #S63 which is a sub for Bus #70, was involved in a traffic accident during the morning bus run. Local law enforcement, Deming Public Schools Staff, and EMS arrived quickly on the scene and assessed the situation. No one was hurt and parents of the students on the bus are currently being contacted.

Parent and Community Update on the Lockdown at Deming High School

Deming High School was put on lockdown today, April 20, 2023, after administration received a safety concern from a student of a possible gun on campus.  The facts of the situation are as follows:

During a routine safety drug sweep of the Deming High School campus, the school was placed in ‘shelter-in-place.’  Deming Public Schools routinely performs safety drug sweeps at our schools using a K-9 unit and, during any sweep the school will shelter-in-place to ensure no one leaves the campus. During today’s sweep, several students began to text one another about a gun on school grounds.  Another student reported the safety concern to an adult in the building and the school was immediately placed in lockdown, along with surrounding buildings.  Local law enforcement was called to assist. No gun or weapons were found on campus.

Student safety is our first priority. Deming Public Schools (DPS) takes all allegations, threats, and reports of safety concerns very seriously and fully investigates them. During an active investigation DPS will only share information that we can legally disclose and will share the information when it will not cause another safety concern for our students. Please check that your contact information is correct in the parent portal on infinite campus. Parent Portal Link:https://demingps.infinitecampus.org/campus/portal/parents/deming.jsp Notices are sent to the primary contact for students in infinite campus, posted to the district website, emailed to local media and staff, as well as shared on the district’s twitter, Instagram, and Facebook social media pages.

Deming Public Schools urges parents and guardians to talk with your children about false reports, unsubstantiated allegations, and spreading rumors.  Please urge them to use their best judgement when sharing District news. Misinformation and rumors create chaos and fear that disrupts everyone’s education and sense of safety for the entire community.

PSA: Warning Live Streaming Internet Scamming

The New Mexico Activities Association wants to warn the public about a growing trend in internet scamming. There are hundreds of Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube events being promoted, sometimes within prominent online groups, that appear to be real live streams, but are phishing for your personal information, and sometimes trying to install malware on your device.

These posts appear to be legitimately scheduled live streams and be associated with a high school or state association. However, when you click on the link, you are typically asked to enter personal information in order to gain access to the video. These are fake. Do not enter any information.

The NFHS Network is the official video streaming platform of the NMAA. Many of our member schools are utilizing this platform for their own broadcasting needs. However, during the regular season, many schools have decided to use other entities to do their live streaming. Please check with your local high school athletic department for the correct location to watch your favorite team safely. Cats Network is the only live streaming platform used for Deming High School home events.

When on social media, the NMAA maintains a single official account on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and other platforms. The official account for each platform is: @_NMAA for Twitter, AllThingsNMAA on Instagram, and New Mexico Activities Association on Facebook. Some scammers use the NMAA or NFHS logos and other marks to try and deceive you, but there is only one official account for each platform controlled by the NMAA and no sport-specific accounts will be created or used to promote our events.

To protect yourself and your fans from these fake accounts, please verify you are only sharing/posting/retweeting information from our official accounts. The links in our posts AND the link on our profile/bio will ONLY link to the NFHS. If you come across a fake account, please report it by following the platform-specific instructions below.
